Elections: CHEGA wins in Algarve again, with 33.90% of votes

CHEGA was the most voted party in 11 out of 16 municipalities in the Algarve

It is no longer a surprise or a historic feat: CHEGA was once again the most voted party in the Algarve in Sunday’s legislative elections, with 78,168 of votes (33.90%) – up from 27.19% in the 2024 elections.

The far-right party, led by André Ventura, won in 11 out of 16 municipalities in the region: Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira, Loulé, Olhão, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António.

The Aliança Democrática coalition (AD), made up of PSD and CDS-PP, secured 59,353 of votes (25.74%) and won in the remaining five boroughs: Monchique, Faro, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira and Alcoutim.

The night was an overall disaster for the Socialist Party (PS), and its results in the Algarve were no exception. The socialists, with just 47,293 votes (20.51%), failed to be the most voted party in any borough in a region where PS traditionally has reigned supreme.

Portugal’s liberal party Iniciativa Liberal (IL) followed in fourth (10,047 votes, 4.36%), trailed by left-wing parties Livre (7,735, 3.35%), the CDU coalition (6,170, 2.68%), and Bloco de Esquerda (5,724, 2.48%). Conservative party ADN (4,182, 1.81%) was the eighth most voted party in the Algarve, marginally ahead of environmentalist and animal rights party PAN (4,161, 1.80%).

Smaller parties also received some votes, led by universality party RIR (512, 0.22%), followed by ultra-nationalists Ergue-te (486, 0.21%), eurofederalists Volt Portugal (437, 0.19%), the Nova Direita (New Right) party (423, 0.18%), monarchists Partido Popular Monárquico (332, 0.14%) and finally Madeira-based party Juntos Pelo Povo (262, 0.11%).

These results mean that CHEGA will have four MPs representing the Algarve in Parliament, with AD limited to three and PS to just two: Pedro Pinto, João Graça, Sandra Ribeiro and António Moreira for CHEGA; Maria da Graça Carvalho; Cristóvão Norte and Bárbara do Amaral Correia for AD; and Jamila Madeira and Jorge Botelho for PS.

Meanwhile, abstention increased ever so slightly in the Algarve, with 60.05% of eligible voters casting ballots in 2025 as opposed to 61.74% in 2024.
