The man believed to have attacked Farense footballer Tavinho with a knife, leaving him in “serious condition”, has turned himself in at GNR’s police station in Quarteira.
Authorities had already identified him, but he had not been arrested yet, and is now due to be heard in court.
According to TVI24, he has a record of thefts and had been on parole for two months.
The attack happened in the early hours of Monday morning when Octávio Barros, better known in the football world as ‘Tavinho’, was out celebrating a 2-1 win against Olhanense that guaranteed a playoff spot for his club.
Witnesses said “blood was splattered across the pavement” in front of the bar where the attack took place, while the knife used in the attack was found stuck in a patch of grass behind the bar by reporters from TVI24, who reported the finding to GNR police.
Farense president António Correia later told reporters that the player was attacked following some kind of argument. He said the knife “nearly reached” one of Tavinho’s lungs.
The footballer has already been operated and is recovering at Faro Hospital.
