Big improvements coming for drivers and pedestrians in both towns
Faro and Lagos are preparing for a wave of roadworks as both municipalities move forward with projects aimed at resurfacing and upgrading streets across various neighbourhoods.
In Faro, multiple resurfacing contracts have just been awarded and works are scheduled to begin next week, with a completion timeline of around 60 days, the municipal council says. The effort spans key areas including the downtown (Baixa), Alto Rodes, Santo António do Alto, Penha, and the Jardim de São Luís area.
The downtown street revamp will encompass Rua do Bocage, Rua Brites de Almeida, and Rua Dr. Pereira de Sousa. The works are in the hands of Sociedade J. J. Brito, in a deal worth just over €153,000 (excluding VAT).
Meanwhile, roadworks in Alto Rodes will be handled by José de Sousa Barra & Filhos, for about €181,000. The affected streets include Rua Joana de Alte, Rua César Pola, Rua das Olarias, Rua Emissor Regional Sul, Rua Belchior Vieira, Rua Mestre Manuel Martins, Rua Gaspar Leão, Rua do Alto Rodes, Rua D. Frei João de Faro and Rua Alferes Arnaldo Luzia da Silva.
In Santo António do Alto, Hidralgar – Equipamentos Hidromecânicos will take on the resurfacing of key roads such as Ruas Almirante António Ramalho Ortigão, Rua José Rosário Silva, Rua Raul Matos, Rua Madre Teresa Calcutá, Rua Tenente Coronel António Palermo Oliveira, Rua José Mateus Horta, Rua Grupo Teatro Lethes and Rua Doutora Fernanda Mealha, under a €168,000 contract.
Finally, Manuel António & Jorge Almeida – Construções has been tasked with repaving roads in the Penha and Jardim de São Luís area, including Estrada de São Luís, Rua Ataíde de Oliveira and Rua D. Jerónimo Osório, in a €149,000 agreement.
The local council says that these works will complement ongoing pavement upgrades and are aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and the overall quality of public spaces. Residents and road users are advised to expect temporary disruptions and consider alternative routes where necessary.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, a €742,000 investment will bring street upgrades to eight areas across the municipality, including Almádena, Barão de São João, Bensafrim, Chinicato, Luz, Odiáxere, Sargaçal, and the town of Lagos itself. This is part of the local government’s phased road improvement program, targeting streets that have been identified as a priority. The exact streets that will be upgraded have not been specified, however.
The Lagos works are set to unfold over the next 180 days.
