António Miguel Pina has been elected the new mayor of Faro, winning the local election with 39.48% of votes (12,533). After 12 years at the helm of neighbouring borough Olhão, the Socialist (PS) candidate will now take the top seat at the municipal council of the Algarve’s capital.
Algarve MP Cristóvão Norte, who headed a coalition comprising PSD, IL, CDS-PP, PAN, and MPT, finished second with 31.64% (10,059), while Pedro Pinto, representing CHEGA, received 17.26% (5,489).
Pina will rule without a majority, however, with four councillors against PSD-IL-CDS-PAN-MPT’s three and CHEGA’s two.
