Faro rolls out measures to offset temporary closure of municipal pools

Faro supports seniors and local swimming clubs with new alternatives

The temporary closure of Faro’s municipal pools has prompted the local council to introduce a set of measures aimed at reducing disruption for residents and local clubs.

At a recent council meeting, officials approved financial support of €25,000 each for the Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro and the Clube de Natação de Faro, helping them continue their swimming programs using alternative facilities outside the municipality. The move is designed to keep programs promoting health, well-being, and social cohesion on track.

At the same time, Faro is arranging the rental of a private indoor pool in the municipality, ensuring that hydro-gymnastics and hydrotherapy sessions under the Sénior Ativo project can continue. The project itself is being expanded to offer new gym classes at the municipal sports pavilion in Penha.

In August, the council announced that the municipal pools were closing for at least 18 months due to technical issues affecting air and water quality, made even worse by the building’s severe deterioration, which required urgent structural renovations.
