Faro to help low-income families with pets

New scheme offers food, vet care and microchipping for pets in low-income households

The municipal council of Faro has created a new program aimed at low-income families and individuals in the municipality who own dogs or cats.

Through the scheme, eligible families can receive help with pet food, microchipping and registration, as well as internal deworming treatments.

According to the local authority, the goal is to reduce the number of abandoned animals, ease the financial pressure on struggling households, and provide better living conditions for pet animals. Inspired by the principles of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, the initiative recognises the “social and emotional role pets play in family life,” the council says.

The project, entitled ‘Faro Integra – 4 patas solidárias’ (Faro Integra – 4charitable paws), builds on the work of Faro’s Official Animal Shelter (CROAF), opened in 2023, extending municipal action from rescue and care to prevention and direct family support.

Residents interested in applying can find the regulation and application form on the municipal website www.cm-faro.pt or contact the Citizen’s Office or CROAF directly.
