Faro’s Teatro das Figuras marks 20 years with over 800,000 spectators

The Algarve’s largest cultural venue is celebrating 20 years of history

Faro’s Teatro das Figuras, the Algarve’s largest cultural venue, is celebrating two decades of history, having welcomed more than 800,000 spectators since opening its doors on July 1, 2005.

Over the past 20 years, the theatre has hosted more than 2,350 events, including concerts, operas, dance performances, theatre productions, exhibitions, cinema screenings, and talks. Since its founding, the theatre has staged around 300 plays involving over 1,000 actors, held more than 700 concerts across various music genres, and featured close to 400 dance performances – from classical ballet to contemporary works.

The venue has also developed dozens of partnerships and co-productions, supporting emerging talent through initiatives like Bandas ao Figuras, South Music, Ciclo Emergente, and the newly launched José Louro Prize for New Dramaturgies, aimed at spotlighting young playwrights under 35.

Designed by renowned architect Gonçalo Byrne, the venue’s striking architecture was intended to reflect the “lightness” of coastal life and the vital role of culture in society.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Teatro das Figuras launched a new website on July 1, offering a modernised look and improved user experience to better serve today’s digitally savvy audiences.

“In a world that is increasingly challenging and shaped by technology, the importance of a cultural space like this one dedicated to cultural enjoyment is more urgent and necessary than ever. With a continued focus on offering a diverse program for all audiences, it embraces both classic productions and bold, experimental artistic projects,” Teatro das Figuras says in a statement to the press.

On this milestone occasion, the theatre extended a heartfelt thanks to its audience: “Today, as we mark 20 years since our debut, we also celebrate those who inspire us to do more and better – our public.”

Teatro das Figuras is located in Faro, in the Horta das Figuras area, near the city’s main shopping centre, Forum Algarve. Its address is Rua João de Brito Vargas, 8005-518 Faro. The venue is easily accessible by car or public transport and is situated just a few minutes from Faro’s historic centre and the airport.

Information about upcoming events at Teatro das Figuras is available on its official website, www.teatrodasfiguras.pt.
