Firefighting planes back up in air over Barão de São João

Over 500 firefighters on ground; residents evacuated have been allowed back into their homes

Early this morning firefighting planes got back up into the air to try and tackle the blaze that has been contained through the night in the forest behind the villages of Barão de São João and Barão São Miguel in the municipality of Lagos.

Residents who were evacuated last night have been allowed to return to their homes.

Various light injuries among locals and firefighters (mainly smoke inhalation) have been reported. One woman has had to be transported to hospital in Lagos due to what was described as “a crisis of anxiety”.

A property, dubbed ‘a second home with no one in it’, was destroyed in the Aljezur municipality yesterday as the blaze charged south – and a number of cars have been burnt in the forested area, again with no drivers/ passengers in them.

The fire is still considered ‘active’, and was burning on two fronts early morning which have since been reduced to just one.

A source for civil protection has said that the night’s work was helped by the drop in the intensity of the wind, but that this is expected to pick up again over the course of the morning.

Further updates to come.
