Algarve historian Peter Kingdon Booker has organised three guided historical walks in Tavira this month. The first took place on Wednesday (April 4) and covered the walled town on the hill, with the next two walks on April 11 of the “Medieval Town” and on April 18 of the “Northern Suburbs”.
In walk “number two”, Peter tells of the demolitions which permit the Praça da República to appear as it does today, and then talks of the gardens in the centre of the town, before looking at the chapels and churches on the southern edge of Tavira, and moving back towards the centre, past the old jail.
The last walk is on the other side of the river and shows the flood markers, the governor’s residence and the churches of the northern suburb, passing the chapel devoted to those suffering from leprosy – of course on the boundary of the old town – and finishing with one of the losers in the Civil War.
Participants should meet at 11am at the Roman Bridge in Tavira. Cost is €2.50.
