Lagoa’s Carlos do Carmo auditorium will host a performance by the Ukrainian National Male Bandurist Chorus, one of the most renowned choral ensembles in Eastern Europe, currently on a European tour.
The concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 14 at 7pm and will serve as a tribute to Ukrainian composer H. Mayborody.
“Internationally recognised for its artistic excellence and for preserving the tradition of the bandura, an emblematic instrument of Ukrainian identity, the chorus presents in Lagoa a performance that goes beyond the musical dimension. Its presence is an act of cultural resistance at a time when Russia’s military aggression continues to destroy Ukraine’s heritage, memory, and artistic legacy,” organisers say.
Held during the Christmas season, the concert stands as a “celebration of resilience and cultural continuity.”
Founded in 1918 in Kyiv, the Ukrainian National Male Bandurist Chorus has endured more than a century of history marked by wars, exile, and renewal. It holds the title of National Chorus of Ukraine and has been awarded the prestigious Shevchenko National Prize, the country’s highest cultural distinction.
The ensemble includes around 45 musicians, all singers and instrumentalists, dedicated to preserving the art of the kobzars. Its international activity spans Europe and the Americas, with performances in historical, humanitarian, and solidarity contexts, including concerts in conflict zones since 2014. Today, the chorus is widely recognised as a true ambassador of Ukrainian culture.
Admission to the Lagoa concert is by donation, with all proceeds going to humanitarian causes.
The event is organised by SOS Oncológico – GAiN Department (Global Aid Network) and the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, with the support of the municipal council of Lagoa.
