Major pipe replacement to improve water service and cut leaks in Carvoeiro area
Lagoa has kicked off a massive €2 million project to upgrade its aging water system, replacing a key 7.5-kilometre water main between the Algarve Clube Atlântico resort and the Praia do Carvoeiro square.
The upgrade includes swapping out nearly 400 household water connections linked to the old pipe, which has seen frequent leaks and service disruptions over the years.
The old asbestos cement pipe is being replaced with a modern cast-iron line, designed to improve water quality, reduce losses, and make life easier for residents in this part of the municipality. Once the new pipe is in place, roads in the affected areas will also get a fresh layer of asphalt, the municipal council says in a statement to the press.
Work began earlier this week on a small section between Estrada da Faria and Estrada do Farol (M530), which is expected to take around 30 days. This first stretch will also allow the long-delayed resurfacing of Estrada da Faria to finally move forward.
After that, crews will head east to Algarve Clube Atlântico and work their way west toward Praia do Carvoeiro. But don’t expect to see them near the beach until winter, as the entire project is set to wrap up only in March 2026.
The replacement marks the first phase of Lagoa’s bigger plan to modernise its water distribution network, as laid out in the municipality’s tactical plan for infrastructure asset management.
The whole project is being 100% funded by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) thanks to a successful funding bid by Lagoa council.
