Lagos’ iconic Ponta da Bandeira Fort set for restoration

The city will soon go ahead with work on the degraded east façade of the monument.

Lagos City Hall has signed the contract to strengthen the east façade of Ponta da Bandeira Fort, part of a project to guarantee the safety and preservation of this monument, which is classified as a Property of Public Interest.

This project was initiated after a joint technical inspection, long requested by the municipality from Cultural Heritage I.P. It was then followed by a positive opinion and approval from the regulatory authority, in line with the regulations for classified properties within the special protection zone of Lagos’ walls and turrets.

The initial report detailing this progress highlights the deterioration of the Fort’s east façade. Notably, in addition to this priority action, the entire property is presently in the diagnostic phase of renovation. The project is estimated to cost €149,307.30 plus VAT and must be completed within 90 days, which includes preparing the Reinforcement Project and the project’s execution.

The project involves structural stabilisation and reinforcement works aimed at reducing the effects of erosion, sea forces, and adverse weather conditions, which have hastened the degradation of the structure in recent years.

Built in the Renaissance style, Ponta da Bandeira Fort is a notable example of 17th-century military architecture in the Algarve, constructed to defend the mouth of the Bensafrim River. Serving as a museum that integrates the Lagos Museum, it is one of the most prominent monuments representing the heritage and history of the Lagos municipality.
