Lisbon mayor seethes as government ignores ‘urgent request’

Carlos Moedas wants solutions ‘now’ to strengthen security in capital

Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas has lamented the ‘deafening silence’ that has met his request to the incoming minister of internal administration for an urgent meeting.

“The security of people who live, work and visit Lisbon cannot be compromised by silence”, he tells tabloid Correio da Manhã. “I will not allow (…) more governative inaction”.

Mr Moedas made his appeal to the new minister almost a month ago – and in it, he called for “immediate measures”.

Crime, and issues of security in Lisbon, are consistently ‘in the news’ and, if not ‘on the increase’, certainly the perception that they are exists.

As Moedas explains, the municipality has installed CCTV cameras in various parts of the city, particular the Cais de Sodré area, but “municipal effort cannot substitute what is essential: an effective reinforcement of the presence of police on the streets”.

In the absence of immediate measures – or indeed a response to the mayor’s request for an urgent meeting – Lisbon police are beefing policing of the city’s areas of Bairro Alto to Cais de Sodré, Santos and Alfama over the coming weekend.
