Lisbon risks more than 50 days a year with temperatures in excess of 35ºC

Experts in urbanism, sustainability, warn Lisbon heating up to point where it will feel like 'country in North Africa'

Capital needs to be turned into ‘sponge city’, say experts in urbanism, sustainability

If emissions in Lisbon are not controlled (and this includes the pollution caused by airplanes), the capital risks suffering temperatures in excess of 35ºC through more than 50 days every year.

This is the conclusion of a working group of experts in urbanism and sustainability tasked with creating a vision for the city.

The bottom line is that the capital needs a lot more in the way of ‘rainwater retention’ infrastructure, and in ‘biodiversity’ (green spaces) – and a lot less in terms of emissions.

According to Diário de Notícias, which breaks the story today, the panel of experts sees Lisbon’s current scenario as “urgent”. They have drawn up a roadmap to 2050, to reduce emissions, and cool the city down. If not adopted, they see Lisbon careering towards a point where it will become as hot as any urban centre in North Africa.

The group’s package of 12 proposals has been sent to Lisbon City Council for discussion at the end of this month.
