Lisbon Socialists call for “clarification on falsehoods, omissions and inconsistencies” in relation to Glória funicular tragedy

Extraordinary meeting to address Socialists’ concerns called for Thursday

PS Socialists in Lisbon City Council have submitted a request for an extraordinary meeting to obtain ‘clarification on falsehoods, omissions and inconsistencies’ in relation to the Glória funicular tragedy almost three weeks ago, in which 16 people lost their lives, and many others were injured.

Councillor Pedro Anastácio has told Lusa that the request for a meeting on 25 September comes “following two media reports, which revealed a set of new facts that were not yet public knowledge and which uncover and demonstrate omissions and inconsistencies”.

At issue, in particular, is the ‘occurrence of two previous accidents involving the funicular – in October 2024 and May 2025 – which were publicly denied by the chairman of the Carris Board of Directors – and the deputy mayor – but which Carris itself has now confirmed, says Anastácio, suggesting this points to a “plan of falsehood in relation to what was conveyed in the City Council and publicly by both political leaders (meaning here, mayor Carlos Moedas and deputy mayor Filipe Anacoreta Correia) and the chairman of the Carris Board of Directors (Pedro de Brito Bogas).”

Pedro Anastácio adds: “We have submitted this request so that we can immediately confront the City Council and the chairman of the Carris Board of Directors with this set of falsehoods, omissions and inconsistencies, and from there we will assess what the political consequences should be”.

In addition to the two accidents prior to the incident that caused so much suffering and loss of life, there is other information to be clarified, says the PS councillor, such as the existence of a letter from the Carris Workers’ Commission, sent to Carlos Moedas on September 20, 2023, warning of ‘poor vehicle maintenance’.

Another purpose therefore of this request is to ask for access to certain documents – such as this letter, reports on accidents that occurred in October 2024 and May 2025, and reports on maintenance and safety issues from the last two years before the incident that was splashed over the world’s media on September 3 this year.

This is just the latest ‘development’ in this terrible incident that is currently being investigated by technical experts, and for which a preliminary report should be forthcoming, from GPIAAF (the office for the prevention and investigation of aircraft and railway accidents) mid-October.
