Living Statues bring festive cheer to Lagoa

Lagoa prepares for another edition of its long-running Christmas street-performance tradition

Some of Portugal’s best living statues are returning to Lagoa in December, promising two days of stunning artistic performances.

The event will take place along Rua 25 de Abril and Largo 5 de Outubro on Friday, December 12 (3pm to 6pm) and Saturday, December 13 (10am to 1pm), bringing to life one of the Algarve’s most recent holiday traditions. Despite being in its 11th edition, the festival is described as the “oldest of its kind in southern Portugal”.

This year, 16 specialists in the art of immobility will take up their positions throughout Lagoa, interpreting characters drawn from nativity themes, historic figures, religion, literature and everyday professions.

Visitors will once again be invited to cast their vote for the Public Award, while a Jury Award will also be presented.

“This event aims to promote and elevate this unique performative art form, showcasing some of the best national artists while also livening up Lagoa’s town centre and supporting local commerce during the festive season,” the municipal council of Lagoa says in a statement.

Entry is free, and more details can be found on the event’s official social media page: facebook/estatuasvivasnatal.
