New municipal pool opens in Mexilhoeira da Carregação

New pool aims to meet "growing demand for spaces" offering aquatic activities

A brand-new swimming pool boasting an impressive view of the Arade River was inaugurated in Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Lagoa on Monday, September 15.

Located in the Boca do Rio urbanisation, the Piscina Municipal da Mexilhoeira da Carregação (PMMC) aims to “meet growing demand for spaces” offering aquatic activities, from swimming lessons to other physical, sports and therapeutic activities, the municipal council of Lagoa says in a statement.

The opening ceremony was led by Lagoa mayor, Luís Encarnação, who unveiled the inauguration plaque before joining the first-ever class in the pool: a lively hydro-gym session called “Áqua Dinâmica”. Also in attendance were key regional sports and civic figures, including Custódio Moreno, regional director of the Portuguese Youth and Sports Institute (IPDJ); Fábio Bota, president of the Algarve Swimming Association; and Águas da Cruz, president of Lagoa’s municipal assembly.

Measuring 17 by 12 metres, with a depth ranging from 80cm to 1.30m, the pool also includes a jacuzzi and is equipped to host a wide variety of activities. It will be open weekdays from 1pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 8.30am to 1pm.

“With this new facility, Lagoa reinforces its commitment to sports and the promotion of healthy living habits, creating more opportunities for residents to stay active,” the council adds.
