Ombria Algarve officially opened in June this year with a clear purpose: to offer a different kind of Algarve experience, one rooted in the inland valleys north of Loulé rather than the region’s busy coastline.
In a conversation with The Resident, Ombria Algarve CEO Patrick Freeman set out how the resort’s early months have unfolded and what the development plans look like going forward.
“The opening months have been incredibly transformative and deeply rewarding. After years of vision, planning and commitment, seeing Ombria Algarve come to life has been a significant and truly special moment for all of us,” Freeman told The Resident.
“Many of our guests describe Ombria Algarve as a place where they can reconnect with nature and with themselves, while experiencing a more authentic side of the Algarve. The local community has also embraced the project with pride, recognising it as an opportunity for sustainable growth and a benchmark for responsible development.”
The combination of luxury with sustainability is one of the core principles of Ombria Algarve, located in the inland parish of Querença and home to a five-star hotel managed by Viceroy Hotels & Resorts and several restaurants, spa and leisure facilities, as well as an 18-hole golf course and an array of properties for sale.
“Every guest has been genuinely moved by the sense of place and people at Ombria. Our philosophy truly resonates with them, as they describe the experience as both refined and meaningful and not being just a concept, but a way of living,” Freeman said. As he put it, “Ombria Algarve is not just a resort, it is an art of living destination inspired by the region’s heritage, landscape and people.
“We combine quiet luxury with a deep respect for nature and culture. While many destinations focus on the coastline, Ombria Algarve reveals the timeless charm of the countryside valleys and rolling hills, its traditions, craftsmanship and serenity. Ombria Algarve is unique; we are not here to compete but to enrich the Algarve by offering a sanctuary for those seeking a deeper connection and a new way to experience luxury,” the CEO explained.
From the very start, Ombria Algarve has looked to become engrained in the local community, working together with and alongside residents to help develop the area.
“Our relationship with the Loulé community is fundamental. We have worked hand in hand with the local municipality, artisans, producers and associations from the very beginning. Many of our team members are from the region and we continuously strive to create opportunities that strengthen the local economy and preserve cultural traditions. Ombria Algarve was born from this land. It embodies the spirit of the Algarve and Loulé, standing as part of a wider ecosystem that is social, cultural and environmental.”
The ultimate goal is to establish Ombria Algarve as a “pioneer for positive change” – one that addresses the Algarve’s “seasonality challenge by offering a year-round, high-quality destination that proves luxury and sustainability can coexist in perfect harmony.”
To do this, the team at Ombria Algarve are focused on creating long-term employment and support local entrepreneurs, while celebrating and preserving the region’s cultural identity. The resort is also “fully committed to protect and regenerate biodiversity, harnessing renewable energy and promoting conscious tourism”.
“Our ambition is for Ombria Algarve to become a benchmark for the future of new-generation resorts in Europe,” Patrick Freeman declared.
While much has already been accomplished, Ombria Algarve is entering an “exciting new phase of development”.
“We are working on the expansion of our real estate offering with new branded residential and touristic concepts that embody our distinctive vision of sustainable luxury, refined living and unique design. We are also deepening our partnerships with local and international sustainability initiatives and creating experiences that foster an even stronger connection with nature, culture and wellbeing,” the CEO told us.
Asked about the resort’s trajectory over the next few years, Freeman predicted that Ombria Algarve will “continue evolving as a living destination”.
“Our vision is to nurture a community shaped by creativity, innovation and genuine connection. In the years ahead, Ombria Algarve will define a new chapter not only for the Algarve but for Portugal, one that embodies the essence of Portuguese hospitality and refined living, in harmony between the land and its people. A project born from the land, not from the plan,” he said.
On a personal level, Freeman described the resort’s opening as confirmation of the project’s vision.
“The most rewarding part has been witnessing how a vision rooted in respect can truly transform a place and inspire generations to come. Being part of such an enduring project fills me with immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility. We can truly feel that we are bringing to life a new model, one designed to shape the future of sustainable living.
“Seeing guests feel at home here, seeing our team proud of what we have built together and watching the land flourish is where the true essence of Ombria Algarve lies. It reminds me that genuine leadership is about creating together, hand in hand, and leaving something meaningful behind,” he concluded.
