The parliament has approved a draft proposal put forward by the Communist Party (PCP) that urges the government to move forward with improvements to the Algarve’s railway.
The proposal, which received favourable votes from all parties except PSD and CDS-PP which abstained, calls on the state to electrify the railway between Lagos-Tunes and Faro-Vila Real de Santo António within the original deadlines.
The communists also demand the construction of the long-promised railway link to Faro Airport, whilst also suggesting the creation of a link between the Algarve and the Spanish region of Andalusia.
Also suggested is the purchase of new electric rolling stock for the Algarve line and the conversion of rail workshops in Vila Real de Santo António to enable the maintenance and repair of the new trains.
PCP also wants more railway workers, such as new engineers and train station employees.
The proposal also backs renovation work to railway stations in need as well as the creation of new stops, including the reopening of the São Marcos da Serra station in Silves borough, and a direct link between Lagos and VRSA.
The communists also want the railway to boast better links to other means of public transportation, especially those that are located furthest from town centres.
If all these suggestions move forward, PCP believes the railway will “undeniable see an improvement in the service provided to users”.
The party says it will become a “more attractive option for residents and tourists” and have a “very positive impact on the mobility of people while also bringing huge benefits for the environment and sustainable development at a local and regional level”.
