Police resuscitate ‘unresponsive’ baby in Loures

Baby under observation in hospital but ‘life not at risk’

After all the dismal stories of ‘men in uniform’ this week, SIC rings the changes – and gives community policing a much-needed boost: two PSP agents on patrol yesterday managed to save the life of a baby already unresponsive in his desperate father’s arms.

The baby had been playing with his father when he started convulsing. He frothed at the mouth, his face turned “very red”, and then he stopped breathing.

It was only by chance that locals aware of the drama caught sight of the police and appealed for their help.

“One of the agents immediately began resuscitation manoeuvres. The other contacted 112 and received instructions to guide the manoeuvres”, says SIC. “A few seconds later, the baby began to cry and resumed breathing”.

In a statement later, the PSP described how one of the agents placed the baby face down on his arm and began “small movements and massages on his back, seeking to stimulate a reaction” while the other relayed instructions from 112.

Both “remained with the child in their arms, monitoring his vital signs until Loures Fire Brigade arrived”.

The baby was taken to Beatriz Ângelo Hospital, where he remains under observation but is not in a life-threatening condition, says SIC.
