Pressure on motorway concessions to abolish ‘classe 2’ tolls

Motorway concession holder Brisa is under pressure to abolish ‘classe 2’ tolls which leave SUVs and vehicles with a height of ‘over 1.1 m above the front axis’ paying considerably more than smaller cars.

The government’s trump card is the fact that Brisa already owes it money.

Explain reports, the plan is to relieve Brisa from paying back in cash by getting it to reduce its income through tolls.

But for this to happen, the whole concession agreement will have to be renegotiated, says tabloid Correio da Manhã, adding that this the crux of a ‘dispatch’ published today in Diário de República which allows for the creation of a commission.

As for the toll differences, they are substantial. A Ford Corsa, for example, travelling from Faro to Lisbon will cost its driver €20.65, while a Fiat Multipla will be charged almost €17 more.
