PSP agent stabbed seven times during festival in Madeira

Agent’s condition stable, despite perforated lung

A 24-year-old PSP agent was stabbed seven times during the popular Festas de São Pedro, in Ribeira Brava, Madeira, over the weekend.

The off-duty policeman suffered a perforated lung, and is interned in Hospital Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal. His condition is described as stable.

According to reports, the attack happened around 3.40am on Sunday, albeit ‘reasons for it’ remain at this point unclear.

An official PSP source has confirmed that a suspect is in police custody. He is a young, local man, who is to be brought before a court today, indicted for attempted homicide.

Local online Jornal de Madeira believes the incident may have been sparked by the agent’s drink having been spiked by a group of individuals.

The agent, stationed in Lisbon, will remain in hospital in Madeira until it is safe to transfer him. Jornal de Madeira adds that he was transported to hospital “in a serious condition”, undergoing surgery shortly afterwards.
