Railways suffer second 24-hour strike in month

Barely 48 hours since the country’s rail network was brought to its knees by a national strike, unions have declared a second walk-out, scheduled for April 16-17.

Workers employed by Infrastruturas Portugal seek pay rises that would add an average of €40 to monthly pay packets.

The government is restricting increases to €240 a year – roughly €20 extra per month.

The new strike has been called by railway machinists.

It is programmed to begin at midday on Monday April 16 and continue until midday 24-hours later.
