The village of Salir in the municipality of Loulé will once again turn back the clock for its much-loved historical festival “Salir no Tempo”, taking place from Friday to Sunday (July 18-20).
Starting daily at 7pm, this annual event is known as one of the most authentic medieval re-enactments in southern Portugal, offering both visitors and locals a chance to experience what life was like during the Middle Ages. Set against the charming backdrop of Salir’s narrow, cobbled streets, the festival celebrates the village’s deep historical roots, especially its significance during the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula.
Throughout the three-day event, Salir will be filled with knights, squires, artisans, merchants, troubadours, dancers, and even snake charmers, recreating the vibrant and complex atmosphere of a time when the region shifted from Muslim to Christian rule.
Festivalgoers can enjoy a rich program of live music, dance, medieval tournaments, falconry shows, fire-breathers, and costumed performers. There will also be plenty of opportunities to engage with the past, including the chance to dress in medieval attire, available to rent on-site at the “Salir no Tempo” costume shop.
Organised by the municipal council of Loulé in partnership with the Salir parish council, the event aims to promote historical awareness and enhance the region’s cultural and tourism profile by valuing both its tangible and intangible heritage.
Tickets cost €3 for one day or €5 for all three days.
