Scots seeking sunshine choose Portugal

Inaugural Scottish Moving to Portugal Show will take place in Edinburgh on November 21

Portugal has scooped a string of accolades in recent years, bringing it to many people’s attention as a potential place to relocate. Global Citizen Solutions’ Global Retirement Report names Portugal the world’s best location for retirees.

The World Golf Awards has crowned it the Best Golf Destination in the World for the last three years running. And Savills pointed to Portugal as the second strongest growth market in Europe for real estate investment volumes in Q1 2025.

Portugal’s southern Algarve region has also been attracting keen attention. The Post Office Holiday Money Report named it the world’s most affordable holiday destination for 2025. The Algarve was also crowned the World’s Leading Beach Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards – for the third time.

These and other factors have resulted in a surge of interest from Scots keen to know more about Portugal’s year-round sunshine, outdoor lifestyle, appealing tax benefits and award-winning credentials.

As a result, the UK’s premier event for those considering relocating to Portugal, the Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars, is due to host its first ever Scottish event. Taking place at Edinburgh’s iconic Scotsman Hotel on November 21, 2025, the show is ideally suited to anyone actively considering a new life overseas.

Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, says: “In the last six months, interest from Scottish residents in relocating to Portugal has grown tremendously. Enquiries have focused particularly on residency, property purchases and long-term lifestyle changes. In order to meet this surge in demand, we’re delighted to bring the Moving to Portugal Show to Edinburgh in November, to connect potential movers with the best advice and resources.”

Organised by the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, the Moving to Portugal Show will deliver expert-led seminars covering property investment, legal and financial planning, healthcare access, pensions, relocation logistics and residency permits. Show visitors will also have the chance to book exclusive one-to-one consultations with a range of Portugal specialists.

Building on the long-running success of the London and Dublin editions of the Moving to Portugal Show, the inaugural Scottish event will include a curated exhibition of top-tier property developments, legal firms, financial advisors, and relocation experts.

Confirmed exhibitors at the event will include foreign exchange specialists Currencies 4 You, tax advisors Forvis Mazars, real estate agent Garvetur, SBPS Legal and business management service provider TPMc.

Those who have already made the move from Scotland to Portugal will also be at the event to share their experiences of living and investing there. The aim is to ensure that visitors have access to all the information they need to plan a seamless move.

Portugal’s increasingly high international profile has put the country on the radar of many of those seeking an enhanced lifestyle in an idyllic overseas location. And with a growing number of flights between Scotland and Portugal – including to the mainland cities of Lisbon, Porto and Faro, and to Funchal on the island of Madeira – it is easier than ever for Scots to explore the possibility of relocating to the sun.

“Portugal has such broad appeal, it attracts everyone from entrepreneurs to families to retirees. Whether you’re planning a permanent move, seeking a retirement sanctuary or dreaming of a second home in the sun, the Moving to Portugal Show is the place to find the practical guidance, expert insights and crucial networking connections you need to turn plans into reality,” continues Christina Hippisley.

The Moving to Portugal Show is free to attend, with visitors required to register online in advance at https://MTP-Edinburgh.eventbrite.co.uk
