Second British tourist found dead in Albufeira

Latest tragedy also linked to excess ‘partying’

In the space of hours, two British tourists to Albufeira have been found dead – both after consuming what are understood to have been excessive amounts of alcohol.

The latest tragedy, covered by the UK’s Daily Mail, involves a 21-year-old, whose body is believed to have been found at the bottom of a flight of steps in Avenida da Liberdade.

He had all his belongings with him, thus police are not treating the incident as ‘crime related’. But it is nonetheless another deeply distressing incident that further blights the ‘good name of Albufeira’ as a holiday destination – in spite of all local efforts to rein in anti-social behaviour.

The Mail appears to be the only news source carrying this story.

According to the paper, the young tourist’s body was found before that of Scotsman Greg Monks, who went missing during a night out with friends on a ‘stag do’, and whose body was only found some days later.

The paper carries comments from hotel/ bar workers in Albufeira, lamenting the drunken excesses of visitors who “buy drugs straight away, and have no idea what they are cut with”.

The Mail alludes to efforts to enforce a ‘code of conduct’. For now, the 21-year-old victim has not been named; nor is it clear what led to the sad discovery of his body at the bottom of a flight of steps. ND
