Tragic outcome has been confirmed by PJ police
Portugal’s PJ police have formally confirmed that the body of Greg Monks, the 38-year-old British man who had been missing for one week, has been found at the bottom of a ravine in Albufeira.
The police force says his body was found at Cerro de Águia, a long way from the spot where he was last seen.
PJ inspectors are at the scene investigating and recovering the body, assisted by the GNR police officers and Albufeira firefighters.
National tabloid Correio da Manhã adds that “all possible scenarios” are being considered by police, including that the holidaymaker may have fallen by accident.
CMTV, the newspaper’s television channel, is also at the scene, reporting that investigators are trying to establish whether the man was already dead when he fell – reportedly from a height of several dozens of metres – or if he died from the impact.
The TV station also says police have been able to confirm that the man caught an Uber to the area and was left at a so far unidentified nightlife establishment. CMTV adds that he is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.
Once removed, the body is expected to be taken to a legal medicine office in the Algarve for an autopsy to be conducted-
Greg had last been seen in the early hours of Wednesday morning (May 28) in Albufeira. He had flown into Portugal on Tuesday with a group of friends and had gone out to celebrate the start of their trip. He reportedly told his friends he was heading back to his holiday apartment on his own after several hours of partying and drinking.
According to his cousin Alison Meechan Fraser, Greg’s last official sighting was on CCTV surveillance cameras at around 3.27am on Wednesday morning, walking along Rua da Gralheira near a villa known as Villa Aguia Mar.
On the Missing Person Greg Monks – Albufeira, Portugal Facebook page, a short post is calling for people to wait for the family to post a statement, “out of respect”.
