A new urban culture festival is set to take over Praia dos Pescadores this week as the first edition of Albufeira Radical gets underway from Thursday to Saturday (April 2 to April 4).
The event is aimed at younger audiences and focuses on radical sports such as skate and BMX, live music and street culture, turning Albufeira’s famous beachside square into a hub of activity over three days.
Each day will feature demonstrations and competitions in disciplines such as skateboarding, BMX, inline skating, scooters and climbing, alongside water-based activities including surfing, kayaking and foiling.
Activities will run from 3pm to 7pm on April 2, and from 9am to 7pm on April 3 and April 4, giving visitors the chance to watch or try a range of sports that are not always widely accessible.
One of the highlights is expected to be an urban “highline” display, where participants cross between two elevated points using a suspended line – a growing sport in Europe that combines balance and endurance.
The festival also includes workshops, street food and live performances, from concerts to a live mural painting.
Albufeira Radical is part of the city’s programme as a European City of Sport and is organised by the local council in partnership with the parish of Albufeira and Olhos de Água.
Admission is free.
