Swimmers from 15 countries make waves at Swim Party 10km Algarve

“The conditions were absolutely perfect," says organiser Mariana Moura Santos

Lagoa’s stunning coastline was the setting for the Swim Party 10km Algarve, which last Saturday, September 6 drew competitors from four continents to one of Europe’s most demanding open-water courses.

Favourable Atlantic currents and 19-degree waters helped many swimmers post personal bests along the 10km route from Praia do Carvalho to Praia dos Caneiros. “The conditions were absolutely perfect,” said event organiser Mariana Moura Santos. “Watching swimmers push their limits while being surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful coastline – that’s what makes this event special.”

Individual competitors and three-person relay teams navigated the technical course under the watchful eye of maritime police, Lagoa firefighters, and a 30-strong volunteer crew.

According to the organisers, the “weekend’s highlight” came during a sunset gathering at Vila Vita Parc Resort on Thursday, September 4, where some of Portugal’s sporting legends shared their journeys with an intimate audience of swimmers and local athletes.

Vanessa Fernandes, the Olympic silver medallist who now calls Carvoeiro home, spoke candidly about her transition from competitive triathlon to her current mission through the VANZAYA platform. “Her focus on mental wellness and authentic living resonated deeply with attendees seeking their own balance between performance and personal fulfilment,” organisers say. “Portugal’s swimming federation president Miguel Arrobas brought decades of wisdom from his 1992 Olympic experience, emphasising how the values learned in the pool extend far beyond competition. His presence bridged generations of Portuguese aquatic sport, inspiring both seasoned athletes and newcomers alike.”

Meanwhile, post-race celebrations at the waterfront Rei das Praias restaurant “showcased the best of Algarve hospitality”. Swimmers were greeted with traditional “bola de berlin” pastries, from Delícias de Portimão, before settling into a feast featuring fresh seafood stew and wines from Herdade do Sobroso.

“Awards ceremony highlights included unique ceramic pieces from Olaria Porches Pottery, with the day’s top performers also receiving a bottle of Herdade do Sobroso wine, which was highly appreciated at lunch, as well as a Delta Cafés coffee machine each, as recognition of their outstanding efforts. The afternoon’s entertainment blend of Junior & Jaques Medronho spirits and live music by young artist Diana Piedade created an atmosphere where new international friendships flourished,” the team behind the event added.

Bringing together so many swimmers from different parts of the world has become central to the event’s identity. “We’ve created something that goes beyond typical racing,” said event co-founder Svetlana Zadedyurina. “Every year we see lasting friendships form between people who might never have met otherwise. That human connection is our greatest achievement.”

Early discussions for the 2026 edition of Swim Party 10km Algarve are already underway.
