The municipal council of Tavira will install a CCTV surveillance system in the town’s historic centre, following in the footsteps of several other Algarve boroughs.
The protocol for the installation, signed last Thursday between the council and PSP police, will pave the way for video surveillance in an area designated a “priority zone” due to its unique characteristics.
The cameras will be monitored and managed by PSP, who will handle data collection and analysis. According to the municipality, the system “will not replace” the visible presence of police officers on the ground but will serve as a complementary tool, providing a deterrent effect and enabling faster response to incidents. It is also expected to assist in identifying suspects involved in criminal activity.
Municipal officials add that the system complies fully with constitutional rules and citizens’ rights, freedoms and guarantees, underlining its role as a technological reinforcement for the protection of people, property, and even animals within public spaces.
Tavira becomes the sixth Algarve municipality to implement CCTV in public areas, joining Olhão, Portimão, Loulé, Faro, and Albufeira. Other councils, including Lagos and Lagoa, are also preparing to move forward with similar systems in the near future.
