New “super-ministry” praised by the Portuguese Tourism Confederation
Portugal’s tourism sector is hoping for a bigger seat at the table under the country’s new “super-ministry” for Economy and Territorial Cohesion.
The Portuguese Tourism Confederation (CTP) has welcomed the appointment of Manuel Castro Almeida to head the newly merged ministry, saying the move could “contribute to economic growth”.
“In theory, the creation of a “super-ministry” that brings together the Economy and Territorial Cohesion may even be positive, as it could contribute to economic revitalisation, with the supervision of the main sectors of the economy and the management of the funds and support necessary for the development of strategic infrastructure, which are essential for the growth of the national economy, being integrated into the same ministry,” said CTP president Francisco Calheiros in a statement. He added that CTP hopes tourism will continue to be a top priority for policymakers in Lisbon.
Meanwhile, Calheiros also praised the creation of the new Ministry for State Reform, which he hopes will bring about the changes that are “so necessary for the country to finally move forward.” As he explained, “it has been a priority for the CTP to draw attention to the urgent need for a thorough reform of the state”.
