Volunteers help renovate rundown homes in Castro Marim

Thirty volunteers restore homes in Castro Marim

Three families in the Algarve municipality of Castro Marim are starting fresh after young volunteers from the ‘Just a Change’ project rolled up their sleeves this August to transform their homes.

Around 30 volunteers – from university students to doctors, nurses and designers – came together to restore three houses in Castro Marim, Corujos and Corte Pequena. Guided by an expert supervisor, they worked side by side to bring dignity and comfort to families living in vulnerable conditions.

The initiative was made possible through a partnership between Just a Change, the municipal council of Castro Marim and the Association of Social Well-being of Azinhal Parish.

By the end of August, the renovated houses were handed back to their owners in heartfelt ceremonies “filled with emotion and hope,” the council of Castro Marim says.

Founded in Portugal in 2010, Just a Change is a non-profit association dedicated to combating housing poverty by renovating homes for people living in precarious conditions.
