Candidates should ideally have a background in natural sciences
The National Iberian Lynx Reproduction Centre in Silves is looking for three volunteers to join its ethology and video surveillance team.
The call was announced by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), which manages the facility. The internships will last three months and are ideally suited for candidates with a background in natural sciences, says ICNF, adding that training will be provided.
Volunteers will be based at the Silves centre, where accommodation is offered free of charge. In addition, participants will receive a meal allowance of €6 per eight-hour shift and will be covered by personal accident insurance.
The centre has played a leading role in the recovery of the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) population, and has operated since 2009 as part of a broader program to reintroduce the species into the wild. It supports the breeding, preparation, and release of lynxes across the Iberian Peninsula.
So far this year, 11 cubs have already been born at the centre – adding to a total of 181 since its founding. Many of these animals have gone on to help rebuild populations in key rewilding areas in Portugal and Spain.
