Young man fighting for life after being shot in Algarve

Victim critically injured in attack linked to nightclub argument

A 24-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot in the Algarve municipality of Silves.

PJ police said the shooting took place late on Sunday night (March 1) after the victim and another man, 22, had a disagreement at a nightclub in the inland village of São Marcos da Serra over what inspectors described as “motivos futéis” – a Portuguese expression used to explain a minor, petty, or insignificant cause that escalates unnecessarily.

Investigators say the altercation was calmed by other people at the nightclub, and the suspect left the venue. However, the suspect returned moments later, armed with a shotgun, firing two shots at the victim’s car and causing significant damage to the bodywork and windows. He also fired three additional shots into the air before leaving the scene.

Despite the attack, the victim drove to another nightclub in São Bartolomeu de Messines, accompanied by friends. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect fired at the victim again, hitting him between the neck and head.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in intensive care at Faro Hospital, in an induced coma, battling for his life, the criminal police force says.

Backed by the GNR police of São Bartolomeu de Messines, the PJ quickly launched an investigation that led to the suspect’s identification, arrest, and the seizure of the weapon used.

The suspect is due to appear before a judge. The inquiry is being led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Silves.
