Dr. João Martiniano is a podologist, a foot doctor, who studied at the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave in the north of Portugal and is qualified to treat all manner of foot problems.
“Our feet transport us everywhere, they need special care as a foot problem can easily lead to other serious conditions such as back pain” said Dr. Martiniano.
Podology is a relatively recent medical speciality in Portugal, Dr. Martiniano and his colleague Dra. Áurea Rocha opened their first clinic in Portimão last year, but Dr. Martiniano also works at polyclinics in Vilamoura and Lagos.
Podology is split into four groups, offering a wide range of specialised treatments for patients including; podogeriatry, the treatment of elderly feet, sport podology, treatment for people who practise a lot of sport and sports professionals and podopediatry, to monitor and correct children’s feet and feet of people at risk, such as diabetics.
Latest equipment
The clinic in Portimão has the latest in foot care equipment where special insoles can be made for individual patients.
“As medicine is constantly advancing, I feel doctors should continue to study throughout their career to give their patients the best possible solutions” adding “this is why I am currently taking a part time course in biomechanics and human movement at Seville University”.
Dr. Martiniano also visits primary schools around the Algarve, offering free foot checks for children, saying “I believe it is important to help the community and teach parents about how to look after children’s feet and the necessary treatments to correct the problems”.
The Podosaúde clinic is located at Urb. Horta de Sao Pedro, Ed. Bela Raminha, Lote 20, Lj. 8 (near the Jose Buisel school) in Portimão. The clinic is open every weekday from 10am until 1pm and 2pm until 7pm.
