In a rather bizarre cameo that unfolded this morning as ‘parliamentary business’ not far away spiralled into mounting confusion, outgoing prime minister António Costa gave another speech – this time in the form of a press conference uploaded over social media – from the ‘official residence’ in São Bento which he is still occupying.
The speech was about his years leading the country, and his hopes that the future government’s relationship with President Marcelo will be “even better” than his was.
As if none of the current political tension was of any concern to him (which it possibly isn’t), Mr Costa waxed lyrical over the eight years in which he “could not remember a relationship more fluid”.
President Marcelo has equally waxed lyrical this week about Mr Costa – hinting that the pair ‘could be meeting again in the service of Portugal’… The speech went on for over an hour, so more of it may be highlighted in a subsequent text.
