Relocating to a new country is one of life’s biggest challenges. Between logistics, paperwork, cultural adaptation, and the emotional toll of starting over, it’s a process that requires not just planning, but guidance and trust. To better understand the complexities of the sector and how one of Portugal’s leading companies approaches them, we sat down with Jorge Gomes, CEO of Global International Relocation (GIR), who shared his insights on mobility today and where it is headed.
GIR has been in the market for nearly two decades. What makes the company stand out in such a competitive industry?
“We are proud to be the most certified and awarded company in our sector in Portugal,” Jorge states with a proud yet humble smile on his face. “But beyond that, what truly sets us apart is our human approach. We combine efficiency with empathy, making sure each relocation is personalised and centred on the client’s unique needs. For us, mobility is not just about moving people – it’s about moving (and helping change) lives.”
This philosophy has guided GIR in expanding its services to cover every possible detail of international mobility, from moving household goods to specialised divisions – such as their Global Pets and Global Fine Arts – ensuring that families, pets, and even art collections are taken care of with the same dedication and care.
Portugal has become an increasingly popular destination. Why do you think so many people are choosing to move here?
“Portugal offers an extraordinary quality of life,” Jorge notes. “It’s an extremely safe country, with a welcoming culture and people, a mild climate, and a strong healthcare and education system. That combination has attracted retirees, professionals, digital nomads, and investors alike.”
He adds that Portugal’s reputation as a lifestyle destination has grown steadily, positioning it among Europe’s most desirable places to both live and work.
Have client profiles changed in recent years?
“Absolutely! We’ve seen a diversification in the types of clients coming to Portugal. Families remain a significant part of our work, of course, but there’s also been a steady rise in retirees seeking a better quality of life, digital nomads attracted by the climate and connectivity, and of course, corporate relocations as companies expand operations here.”
This shift, he explains, reflects Portugal’s growing international reputation as both a lifestyle destination and a professional hub. “Each group has very specific needs, and our role is to adapt to all of them – be it helping families with schools, retirees with healthcare, or professionals with work and housing.”
What are the main challenges people face when relocating internationally?
According to Jorge Gomes, the three biggest hurdles are logistics, bureaucracy, and adaptation.
“Transporting belongings securely, navigating immigration and customs requirements, and then adjusting to a completely new environment can be altogether overwhelming,” he explains. “That’s why we always make sure our clients don’t feel ‘alone’. From managing documents and timelines to helping families integrate into their new daily life here, we cover every step of the process.”
How does GIR support clients in overcoming these challenges?
“Personalisation is at the heart of what we do,” Jorge emphasises. “Every case is different, and thus we design different solutions accordingly. Whether it’s helping a family find the right school, ensuring a pet’s safe journey, or transporting valuable items like artworks or vehicles, our teams bring the expertise needed to give our clients the peace of mind they long for in this process.”
Jorge also highlights GIR’s strong network of international partners and certifications, which provide assurance that each relocation follows the highest global standards.
Sustainability is an increasingly important topic in all industries. How does it fit into GIR’s vision?
“We take sustainability very seriously,” Jorge tells us. “We hold ISO 14001 certification and were recently evaluated by EcoVadis. Our commitment includes optimising routes, reducing packaging waste, and investing in hybrid and electric vehicles. Mobility has an environmental impact, but we believe it’s our responsibility to reduce it wherever and however we can.”
Can you share an example where GIR’s approach truly made a difference for a client?
“One that comes to mind was a relocation from Asia to Portugal,” he recalls. “The family not only needed their goods transported, but also required help enrolling their daughter in school and bringing their dog safely to their new home. Coordinating all of this within a short timeframe was complex, but it showed how integrated solutions and attention to detail can transform a stressful move into a smooth and positive experience. They still live here and are quite happy with their new life!”
Looking ahead, what opportunities do you see in the mobility sector?
Jorge quickly points to two main trends: “First, there is a growing demand for specialised services – people want more than standard relocation. Second, there is what I call the humanisation of mobility. Clients want guidance, empathy, and reassurance. They don’t just want their belongings packed and moved; they want to feel supported throughout the process and as they adapt to their new lives.”
Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering a move to Portugal?
“View it as an opportunity, not just a challenge,” Jorge advises. “Portugal has so much to offer, but the process can be complex. With the right partner, the transition becomes far less stressful and much more rewarding. My advice is therefore simple – don’t try to do it all alone! Having experienced professionals by your side can be the difference between a difficult move and a truly positive new beginning.” With nearly two decades of expertise, a client-centred philosophy, and a clear vision for the future, GIR continues to stand out as a trusted leader in international relocation. For Jorge Gomes, their CEO, success is not measured in moves completed, but rather in lives transformed “always with empathy, efficiency, and a human touch.” he adds.an begin enjoying your new home from day one.
