The Algarve is one of the most popular destinations for Portuguese travellers during the Christmas and New Year period, according to data released by FlixBus. The bus operator recorded an 11% increase in demand for trips to the region compared with the same period in 2024.
Towns such as Vila Real de Santo António, Vilamoura, Tavira and Olhão ranked among the most sought-after destinations on FlixBus’s Portuguese network, the company reported.
In response to the seasonal rise in demand, FlixBus says it has strengthened its operations across all domestic and international routes during the festive period, increasing capacity to accommodate higher passenger volumes.
“The Algarve continues to establish itself as one of the preferred destinations for Portuguese travellers at this time of year, particularly for New Year’s Eve,” said Tiago Cavaco Alves, Operations Director of FlixBus in Portugal. He added that the growth in demand confirms the region’s appeal for those choosing to celebrate the end of the year away from home.
Nationwide, FlixBus reported a 12% increase in demand for bus travel during the Christmas and New Year period compared with last year.
