The Algarve Knitting and Crochet Group, based in Armação de Pêra, has announced the success of this year’s winter project. Led by group organiser Sheena Rawcliffe, the initiative set out to create 555 hats for homeless and low-income families across the region. Thanks to an extraordinary community effort, the final total has soared to more than 700 handmade hats.
This achievement was made possible through the combined support of Friends Crafting in the Algarve, the Grupo de Croché e Tricô de Armação de Pêra, the São Brás Ladies, and a large number of individual knitters and crocheters from all over the Algarve, who generously contributed their time, creativity and wool.

In addition to the hats, volunteers also produced lap blankets, shawls, scarves and socks, ensuring that many more vulnerable people will be a little warmer this winter. All items will be distributed to charities and support organisations throughout the Algarve.
This year’s project received an added international touch with a thoughtful donation of 50 handmade scarves from Singapore, personally delivered by Michelle Seyffert, who leads a crafting group there.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part,” said Sheena Rawcliffe. “The response has been overwhelming, and every single item will make a difference. Thank you to all the groups and individuals who contributed—this success belongs to all of you.”
With over 700 hats completed – and so many hands joining together in kindness – the teams behind this year’s campaign say that it reflects the “remarkable community spirit that thrives across the Algarve.”
