The Algarve has once again been voted “Best Summer Destination” at the 2026 Irish Travel Industry Awards, marking the fifth time the region has won the title.
The award was presented on Thursday, January 22 in Dublin, at a gala bringing together leading figures from Ireland’s travel and tourism sector.
To win its fifth award, the Algarve overcame competition from other major sun-and-sea destinations, including Costa del Sol, Greece, Lanzarote and Spain.
“The result reflects what Irish travel professionals consistently see as the region’s consistent quality, diversity and attractiveness as a holiday destination,” the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) says in a statement.
Ireland remains one of the Algarve’s most important markets. According to ATA, the region accounted for more than 75% of all overnight stays by Irish tourists in Portugal, making Ireland the third most important foreign market for the Algarve. That trend continued into 2025, with the Algarve once again concentrating nearly three-quarters of Irish tourist overnight stays nationwide between January and July.
ATA president André Gomes believes the award reflects a relationship built over time: “The Irish market is mature, with consolidated purchasing power and travel habits, and recognises the quality and diversity of what the Algarve has to offer. This award strengthens that relationship and confirms that the region continues to meet the demands of a demanding and loyal market.”
Voted for directly by travel agents, tour operators and industry experts, the award comes at a time when “easy air access, safety and high-quality experiences” are increasingly valued, the tourism association points out. “For the Algarve, the accolade further strengthens its reputation in the Irish market, giving the region another advantage and selling argument,” it adds.
With this latest distinction, the Algarve adds to previous wins in 2026, 2020, 2012 and 2011.
