Algarve farmers urged to report Storm Claudia damage

Regional authorities move to assess destruction and prepare support measures

Farmers across the Algarve are being urged to report crop losses after Storm Claudia tore through the region last week, causing widespread flooding and destruction.

The Algarve’s Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) announced on Tuesday that a full assessment of agricultural damage is now underway, with a view to providing sector-wide support measures.

In a statement, the commission said it is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, local councils and regional farming organisations to roll out a set of initiatives aimed at helping producers hit by the recent extreme weather.

Farmers who suffered losses can now submit reports through an official CCDR form available on the institution’s online channels. Once completed, the document can be emailed to the CCDR (vicepresidencia-ap@ccdr-alg.pt) or delivered in person at several locations: the Agrarian Experimentation Centre in Tavira, the Technical Support Division at Portimão Fishing Port, the Patacão Service Desk in Faro or the Alcoutim branch.

According to the CCDR, the information gathered will help authorities “evaluate the impacts and support proposals for appropriate aid measures” for the sector.

Storm Cláudia left a trail of destruction across mainland Portugal, triggering 4,017 emergency incidents since last Wednesday, more than half of them floods.

The worst-hit areas including Setúbal, Porto and the Algarve, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection.
