Algarve Food Bank gears up for weekend food collection campaign

The Food Bank is calling for volunteers

The Algarve Food Bank (Banco Alimentar do Algarve) is calling for volunteers to help carry out one of its most crucial missions of the year – a massive nationwide food collection this weekend (November 29 and 30) ahead of the holiday season.

With 140 participating stores across the Algarve, extra hands are essential to hand out bags, collection donations, and keep the operation running smoothly. In the Faro and Portimão warehouses, help is also needed to unload, sort and pack thousands of kilos of food.

Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of the Algarve Food Bank, is calling for the region to rally once again, stressing that community support is “fundamental to helping thousands of families and bringing comfort at Christmas.” He warns that poverty remains “a structural problem in the country,” with many households still relying on regular aid.

Registration for volunteers is mandatory for every campaign and can be completed online.

Meanwhile, those looking to contribute to the campaign can make their donations directly in stores, either by donating food or by purchasing vouchers, as well as online at www.alimentestaideia.pt or www.bancoalimentar.pt/faca-um-donativo, or via MBWay (913 738 587).

Food producers, distributors, and other companies in the sector are also encouraged to donate surplus products throughout the year.

During the last collection campaign in May, the Algarve Food Bank gathered 120.24 tonnes of food, which were distributed to 15,000 people facing hardship across the region.
