Algarve placed under red alert as heavy rain continues

Rain continues to fall with great intensity in the Algarve

The Algarve has been ‘upgraded’ to red alert – the most serious of all – until at least 3pm today due to the heavy rain which continues to batter the region.

While the weather hit the western Algarve the hardest in the early morning, civil protection authorities say Faro in the east has been the worst affected municipality, with multiple cases of floods and trees toppling due to the intensity of the wind.

The floods occured mostly in the areas which are usually prone to flooding, namely in Faro’s historic centre, a source for the Algarve’s Civil Protection told Lusa news agency.

Despite the many incidents – which have yet to be officially tallied – no one has been injured, the source added.

Elsewhere in Portugal, the Alentejo remains under orange alert – the second most serious – while the rest of the country is under yellow – the least serious of all.

The latest weather alerts are updated on the website of Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).
