Algarve towns join forces in bid for European Wine City 2026

Bid features Lagoa, Albufeira, Monchique, Portimão, Silves and São Brás de Alportel

Six Algarve towns have launched a joint new bid for the title of European Wine City 2026.

Under the banner “Algarve Golden Terroir”, six municipalities –  Lagoa, Albufeira, Monchique, Portimão, Silves, and São Brás de Alportel – have teamed up to showcase the region’s growing reputation as a wine destination.

The joint candidacy aims to shine a spotlight on the Algarve’s unique and authentic wines, shaped by diverse soils, native grape varieties, and a Mediterranean-Atlantic climate. The campaign also aims to promote wine tourism as a year-round economic activity, helping boost the local economy and strengthen territorial cohesion. Sustainability is another key aspect of the bid, with a strong focus on responsible farming and the preservation of the Algarve’s natural landscapes.

Backed by the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), and local producers, the bid highlights not only wine but also other regional treasures like olive oil and cork.

The winning city or region will be announced on Friday, May 23, during a special assembly of the Portuguese Association of Wine Municipalities (AMPV) in Alandroal. The Algarve is up against the Azores and Baixo Alentejo in the final decision.

If selected, 2026 will see a year-long celebration of Algarve wines.
