One of Portugal’s most famous and beloved sweet potato varieties will be the star of a yearly show taking place at the end of November in the western Algarve town of Aljezur.
The Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival is an annual tradition, held every November to celebrate the town’s Lyra sweet potato variety, famous for its unique flavour and texture.

From November 28 to 30, the town’s multiuse centre will host the celebrations of the town’s culinary jewel, including the many traditional ways in which it is cooked – from baked in the oven or fried as chips to cakes and sweets – to more modern uses, such as in craft beer.
Visitors will be able to taste all these creations, as well as enjoy live music, a handicraft fair and family-friendly activities.
“More than a gastronomic event, the Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival is a celebration of the identity and know-how which has distinguished the Algarve and the borough’s main product for generations,” the municipal council says in a statement.
The event will run from noon to 1am. Admission is free.
