An immersive Douro experience

When planning a trip to the Douro, many iconic activities come to mind. You will undoubtedly want to enjoy the breathtaking views of the river and its steep banks carved into terraced vineyards as far as the eye can see, travel its narrow, winding roads, savour the valley’s exceptional wines and gastronomy, learn about its rich history, and appreciate the peace and tranquillity of its wilderness.

In a spectacular setting between Pinhão and Ervedosa do Douro, Quinta de Ventozelo, one of the largest and oldest farms in the Douro, offers all this within its expansive 400-hectare estate.

Located on the left bank of the river, with a stunning view of the valley, this exquisite estate fans out in a broad amphitheatre, rising from the river to an altitude of 600 metres.

The vast property, featuring vineyards, olive groves, and untamed land where fauna and flora thrive, offers a serene environment to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy life’s simple pleasures whilst immersing oneself in the timeless atmosphere of the Douro.

Dating back to around 1500, Quinta de Ventozelo was acquired by Granvinhos, the world’s largest Port Wine exporter, in 2014. The company, owned by the French La Martiniquaise Group, invested €7 million in creating the quiet-luxury hotel, refurbishing the existing buildings with modern comforts and providing five-star service whilst preserving the farm’s history.

Today, this traditional working farm has been transformed into a wine tourism destination, encouraging visitors to connect with nature and rural life. Its architectural simplicity extends to the interior and décor, designed to make guests feel as if they are stepping into an authentic farmhouse – complete with a fireplace, a book, a blanket, and, of course, a good glass of wine – rather than a hotel.

Living in the valley

Within its grounds, the Ventozelo Hotel & Quinta features 29 rooms, spread across seven carefully restored farm buildings that are seamlessly integrated into the estate’s agricultural terraces. Each room, whether in the historic farm buildings, a white-washed wine tank or in the more secluded houses by the river with private pools, offers stunning views of the farm, where every window frames a living work of art.

All of these charming and renovated rustic accommodation options share an exquisite outdoor infinity pool overlooking the tranquil Douro River and the town of Pinhão, where you can watch boats glide on the river and catch a glimpse of the Douro train chugging past.

A genuine farm canteen

Genuine, down-to-earth cooking is part of the estate’s spirit. To share its succulent produce with guests, the hotel’s farm-to-table restaurant, the Cantina de Ventozelo, located where workers once ate their meals, offers authentic dishes made with the finest ingredients produced on the farm and from the region.

Perched above the vegetable garden with a view across the valley, the Cantina and its charming, covered terrace are the heart of the hotel. At one end, a large fire pit slowly burns in rhythm with the farm; at the other, directly opposite the wine bar, a corner terrace overlookin

g the estate and valley is the most sought-after spot for lingering with a glass of wine or a cocktail made with the estate’s aromatic gin.

Led by chef José Guedes, the Cantina’s guiding principle is, in essence, “The Douro Valley in a single Estate”, emphasising the seasonal products grown and produced at Ventozelo, as well as a focus on the concept of “zero kilometres”, which means working with local suppliers.

The cuisine offered is based on a selection of regional dishes and aims to revive past practices, to tell its story through warming, comforting food. The very informal lunches recreate the foods typically eaten during tillage: dishes cooked in the oven, such as Mirandesa veal ribs with chorizo rice, or wild boar stewed with wine, chestnuts and mushrooms, as well as octopus fillets with pepper bread stew and an assortment of fresh vegetable dishes.

In the evenings, as foxes make scattered appearances through the foliage, the emphasis is on cultivating a more refined atmosphere. Dishes such as braised cod with sun-dried tomatoes and arugula, Mirandesa roast beef with homemade pickles, and Terrincho cheese, as well as game pie, are paired with Quinta de Ventozelo’s superb wines.

Breakfast is also a special occasion, offering a generous selection of local and regional products – bread baked in a wood-fired oven, juice made from Ventozelo oranges, Lamego ham, fresh eggs, as well as cakes, granola and jams made in the farm’s kitchen. A slow and comforting start to the day, as you take in the view and wind down your pace until time almost stands still.

An immersive farm stay

After a hearty breakfast, it is time to explore. There is no shortage of activities on the farm. From strolling through the hotel’s lush organic vegetable, fruit, and herb garden – which grows the best Oxheart tomatoes in the region (which once again won the regional prize this year) – to hiking the seven scenic trails, accompanied by audio guides that offer detailed insights into your surroundings, or taking a private 4×4 jeep tour, there is plenty to discover.

After a walk through the vineyards, you can taste the estate’s exceptional wines in the historic winery where the traditional stone lagares remain. An expert guide will lead you through a selection of wines from the Granvinhos portfolio, including red, white, rosé, vintage Port, and sparkling wines. Alternatively, enjoy a rustic picnic among the vines or by the river with a chilled bottle of white.

Quinta de Ventozelo

To share the Quinta’s history, Ventozelo has created an impressive interpretation centre where visitors can explore its terroir and the farm’s story through an authentic sensory experience that highlights its heritage, even revealing the origins of the stunning coat of arms featured in the hotel’s logo.

Guests can also get hands-on experience and enjoy a variety of seasonal activities that are part of the farm’s daily life, such as grape and olive harvests, or take a relaxing river cruise from the estate’s own dock.

Fruit of the farm

Featuring 200 hectares of vines across 29 varieties, growing at altitudes between 100m and 500m, under nearly every sun exposure, Quinta de Ventozelo produces an outstanding range of single-varietal wines that highlight the distinctive aromas and characteristics of each of the Douro’s grape varieties – Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Sousão for the reds, along with Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Rabigato, and Gouveio for the whites, in addition to several intricate blends.

The two Essência blends, the White and the Red, are made with the estate’s finest varieties, aged in oak. Made with 70% Viosinho and 30% Malvasia Fina, the White (€38.50) reveals freshness and complexity on the palate, wrapped in a velvety and elegant texture. The Red (€50) is a blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, characterised by intense colour and floral aromas of very ripe red berries, with hints of fresh mint. It is very rounded and soft, with a fruity, lingering finish.

Loci (€25), the latest addition to the portfolio, reflects the locations (from the Latin ‘loci’) of the estate. It is a superbly structured blend, full of depth and flavour, yet with a light and refreshing body for such a complex red. With five grape varieties from eight different vineyards – Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional and Sousão – the result is a wine full of character.

Before checking out of this delightful farm, which you will not want to leave, do not forget to visit the hotel’s quaint rustic shop to pick up a few bottles of these wines, along with some olive oil, gin, and homemade treats to take a bit of the Douro home with you.
