Beat the heat — and help our dogs!

Now open weekends from 8am to 12 noon; new volunteers always welcome

As Algarve temperatures climb, Cadela Carlota Animal Shelter in Lagos is adjusting its weekend hours to protect both our dogs and our dedicated volunteers. From now on, we’ll be open Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 12 noon.

Early morning walks help prevent heatstroke, paw burns, and dehydration — and they’re much more enjoyable for everyone involved!

Thinking of volunteering? Now’s the perfect time. Join us between 8 and 12 on a Saturday or Sunday. You can meet the dogs, take a gentle stroll, relax in the paddocks, or simply help them socialise. Every bit of attention makes a huge difference in their confidence and adoptability.

💧 Summer Pet Safety Tips
Whether you’re visiting the shelter or caring for pets at home, here’s how to keep animals safe in the heat:

  • Always provide fresh water and shade.
  • Avoid walking dogs on hot pavement during midday.
  • Never leave pets in parked cars, even briefly.
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or collapse.
  • Use pet-safe sunscreen on sensitive spots like ears and noses.

At the shelter, we’ve increased water stations, reduced afternoon activity, and made sure our dogs have shaded places to rest.

🌿 One morning makes a difference
Volunteering even one morning a week can change a dog’s life — and it’ll probably brighten yours too. Enjoy the company of grateful pups, friendly people, and a purpose-filled start to your day.
