Borges shines in Melbourne, handball heroes shock Denmark and Sporting topple PSG

Portugal is celebrating a wave of standout results over the last 24 hours, with major victories across tennis, handball and football.

Early this morning in Melbourne while most of the country was still sleeping, Portugal’s top tennis player Nuno Borges powered his way into the third round of the Australian Open for the third year running, defeating Australia’s Jordan Thompson in a four-set battle lasting just over three hours. After losing the opening set on a tie-break, the Portuguese number one responded in style, winning the three next sets 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. Borges now faces American Learner Tien, the 25th seed, in hopes of reaching the fourth round. Jaime Faria, the other Portuguese representative at the Grand Slam, was knocked out in the second round by Andrey Rublev, the 13th seed-

Hours earlier on Monday night, history was being made in Denmark. Portugal’s men’s handball team stunned four-time world champions and Olympic gold medal holders Denmark with a dramatic 31–29 victory in Herning, securing a place in the Main Round of the European Championship. In front of nearly 15,000 fans, the “Heróis do Mar” showed remarkable composure, with goalkeepers Capdeville and Pedro Tonicher playing key roles and brothers Francisco and Martim Costa combining for 18 goals. It was Portugal’s first-ever win over Denmark and one of the greatest results in the national team’s history.

Back home, the celebrations continued in Lisbon as Sporting produced a stunning 2–1 victory over reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. A late double from Luis Suárez sealed a perfect home record for the Lions and guaranteed at least a play-off place in the race for the last 16. The result lifts Sporting into the top eight of the standings, level on points with PSG, and strengthens their hopes of direct qualification.
