Bordalo II makes eco statement in Vilamoura

The Portuguese urban artist has installed the Sketchy Crab, an artwork made from discarded bicycle parts, to promote sustainable travel and recycling practices.

Portuguese artist Bordalo II is unveiling his latest project, a sculpture titled “Sketchy Crab”, on Alameda da Praia da Marina in Vilamoura, tomorrow, July 24, at 18:00.

Known for creating animals from recycled materials to raise awareness of ecological themes, the urban artist crafted this extra-large crab from “recycled stories and dreams”, he says. “Sketchy Crab is not just a presence in the city, but a whisper of hope and reflection, an invitation to look more closely, and also an appeal to the sensitivity of those who approach it.”

In the heart of Vilamoura, the colourful creature emerges from the poetry of forgotten materials. Discarded pieces of iron, used saddles, handlebars, and remnants of bicycles gain new life as they intertwine into crab-shaped forms — a symbol of resilience and resistance. Each fragment of the old bicycles carries a memory: the movement of an ancient bicycle and the hope for more conscious mobility.

“This crab, a creature inhabiting both beaches and human stories, serves as a living metaphor for the waste we carry and our capacity to transform it into something original and beautiful — something that defies destruction and embraces hope through regeneration and reuse. It is a piece that urges the bustling city to pause, question, and reflect on the cycle of waste and renewal in which we all participate”.
