Casa shuts all 13 stores across Portugal

Fierce competition and mounting debts lead to closure of all 13 stores across the country

Home and garden décor retailer Casa has filed for insolvency in Portugal, shutting down all 13 of its stores across the country.

The move marks the end of the brand’s presence in the country, where it had operated for years with shops in cities including Lisbon, Portimão, Loulé, Guimarães, Matosinhos and Aveiro.

According to business newspaper Jornal de Negócios, the company recorded net losses of €1.6 million in 2024, with sales falling to €9 million. At the time, Casa employed 98 staff and faced debts owed to more than 110 creditors. The group submitted its insolvency request on July 2, which was declared by the court on July 14. The Judicial Court of Sintra ordered the closure of the Portuguese operations on September 12, one day after a creditors’ meeting.

The brand’s difficulties have been linked to fierce competition from rivals such as IKEA, Hôma and Gato Preto, as well as pressure from online platforms like Temu and AliExpress. To raise funds to pay back its debts, Casa has launched an auction of its logistical assets, ranging from shelving and barcode scanners to surveillance systems, with lots valued between €16,000 and €34,000. In addition, remaining stock of furniture and decorative items is being sold off in several stores across the country.

The collapse in Portugal follows insolvency proceedings filed earlier this year by the group’s Belgian headquarters, which halted activity there in March. The company has already closed stores in France and Luxembourg, leaving its future across Europe uncertain.
